Teacher Tube is education's answer to You Tube. This site contains videos posted by teachers that have some educational content. Like with the site from which it got it's inspiration there are a lot of duds out there. However, seek and ye shall find. Be sure to contribute your best videos to the site. A key feature to this site is the fact that links and documents that deal with the subject in the videos are often included for the users to access in addition to just the video content.

A sub-site from the Scholastic website, teachers are provided with a very useful tool for helping students make reading selections. Some of these services include a Quick Search, Leveled Search, and BookAlike search. The Quick Search tool allows you to search by title, author, and keyword, if you already know what you are looking for. The Leveled Search offers more options, and allows you to create individualized reading lists for students based on their interests, reading ability, and age level. In the Leveled Search feature, you can search for books by reading level, type, and genre. You can define reading level by grade level equivalent, Lexile, DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment), or Guided Reading. The reading lists that are generated take into account all of the information provided. For example, if a second grader reads at a 7th grade level, ONLY the 7th grade level books that are appropriate for 2nd graders would come back in the list. The third search option, BookAlike, allows you to find books similar to titles students already enjoy. With BookAlike, you can also specify if the books should be at, above, or below the original book's level. In addition to these three great search functions, the Book Wizard will also show whether books are part of the Scholastic Reading Counts and/or Accelerated Reader programs. Finally, a My Book Lists feature allows you to print, email, and share lists of books that you create. To use this feature, you need to complete the free registration process. Teachers and Students can use del.icio.us to keep links to your favorite articles, blogs, music, reviews, and more, and access them from any computer on the web. You can also share favorites with students, colleagues, and even the entire the del.icio.us community. This is a nice way to set up a WebQuest activity or make a safe way for students to find specific information online.

Diigo is a research and collaborative research tool on the one hand, and a knowledge-sharing community and social content site on the other. A very cool way to bookmark not only sites that you find useful in the classroom, but also highlight information on the web and share your annotations with fellow users. This is a nice way to take students (or colleagues) to a specific place on the web (a long article for instance) and then literally show them (using the highlighter tool) what you found interesting. You can even add notes to the sides of the pages or on them directly with "Sticky Tabs". Diigo is a great tool for educators and students.

Formally known as United Streaming, Discovery Streaming is a subscription service for the web that allows users to log on and view over 40,000 clips from educational programs in the past twenty years. It is a wonderful tool for educators and even allows clips to be downloaded for when web-access is unavailable. The real gem of this service is that videos are broken into specific segments allowing teachers to show the specified section of an hour long program if they choose. The videos can also be incorporated in web-based assessments that will grade student work and send the data to the instructor via e-mail. A really great service that is in place in many schools across the country.

Edublogs is a site that allows users to create blogs for other teachers, students, administrators and anyone and everyone else involved in education. Edublogs are completely free, without any advertising, and come with 100MB of free upload space it is an easy way for teachers to share on the Internet.

Engrade is a free set of web-based tools for educators allowing them to manage their classes online while providing parents and students with 24/7 real-time online class information. It's private, secure, truly free, and unbelievably easy to use. This is a great site for teachers and really makes the grading process much easier.

This website allows teachers and students to upload a video that may have been shot with a low-end video camera or cell-phone. A really nice utility for students and teachers who often have great videos that don't look so great.

GabCast is a website that offers users a way to record messages using their cell phones. The messages can then be downloaded onto a computer and worked with in any number of ways. Students can record interviews with and then easily transfer them to presentations for their classmates. A nice tool that is easy to use and has a lot of educational potential.

Jott is a free service that allows users to call a phone number and dictate notes that are dictated and then transmitted to either the user who makes the call, or a series of their contacts. The message can come in the form of a text message, an email, or both. This is a great way for teachers and students to remind themselves of important tasks. Jott also has an app for the iPhone which is great and I personally find very useful.

Media Convert does just that. You just point the website to the file on your computer that you want to convert and it will do the rest. Works very nicely for changing different picture formats and word processing documents so that you can easily work with them.

Moodle is a course management system (CMS) - a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities. You can download and use it on any computer you have handy (including webhosts), yet it can scale from a single-teacher site to a University with 200,000 students. A great service for educators.

A wonderful way to communicate with people around the globe, for free. As long as both users have this program installed on their computer and some way to communicate (microphone, webcam, even a Skype phone) they can collaborate and talk for free. The ideas are endless for integration of using Skype in the classroom. Think of chatting with a digital Pen-pal that lives in a foreign country. There are also web-forums set up where teachers can connect with other educators that would like to collaborate online using Skype in their classroom.
